AI Agents Display Unprompted Play When Stranded on Virtual Islands

Researchers left copies of the Claude AI model alone on a virtual desert island for 30 hours without tasks or instructions. Surprisingly, the agents began engaging in autonomous exploratory behaviors resembling play. This experiment offers new insights into artificial intelligence agency, spontaneous creativity, and how advanced language models behave when completely unconstrained by human prompts.
