China Imposes Strict Export Controls on Open-Weight Models and Key AI Technologies
China has introduced new restrictions on the export of 23 critical artificial intelligence technologies, encompassing model weights and advanced training methods for high-capacity systems. While a fast-track registration process exists for open-source releases, the regulatory shift is expected to prompt Western organizations to increasingly rely on US-based open-weight models rather than Chinese alternatives.
